Cardiac
Consultations
 |
We
provide consultative and inpatient care at the Ashby and Summit
campuses 24 hours; 7 day a week. In collaboration with he
Berkeley Pulmonary Medical Group we started an Intensivists
program for the care of the critically ill patients.
Telemedicine and our hospital electronic medical record are
under development.

Cardiac
Catheterization
and Coronary Intervention
|

|
We
have two fully equipped
cardiac catheterization laboratories employing the most current digital
imaging X-ray technology. One of the labs is a dedicated EP biplane suite
for performance of diagnostic electrophysiological studies and implantation
of pacemaker and implanted cardiodefibrillator (ICD) devices. This lab also
has sophisticated mapping systems to help detecting and treat the source of
serious arrhythmias.

Alta Bates Medical
Center (www.altabates.com) was one of 17 hospitals in California
and the only one in the East Bay to receive the best rating in the
1996 State of California Heart Attack Outcomes Report ( http://www.oshpd.cahwnet.gov/HQAD/HIRC/hospital/Outcomes/HeartAttacks/)
and consistently have lower than expected mortality in our acute
MI patients for the past ten years. In 2004, both campuses at Alta
Bates Summit performed more than 2,000 diagnostic angiograms and
1,225 percutaneous coronary interventions. Our excellent outcomes
for angioplasty, restenosis (recurrence of blockage), and
event-free survival exceed national benchmarks. Modern technology
has helped us achieve outstanding patient outcomes. At the
Alta Bates campus were the first in the East Bay to use coronary
intravascular ultrasound for placement of coronary stents. This
tool helped our interventional cardiologists deploy the first
generation coronary stents more precisely and with improved
long-term patient outcomes. We were the first East Bay
hospital to use Spectranetic ‘s excimer laser for
debulking instent restenoses. After the introduction of
drug-eluting stents (Cordis, Boston Scientific)
we are currently using newer adjuncts technologies. Some of these
are distal protection devices are Medtronic 's PercuSurge®
and Boston Scientific ‘s Guardwire®,
as well as thrombectomy devices such as Possis (www.possis.com)
thrombectomy devices Angiojet®.
After
recent randomized clinical trials confirmed ST elevation
myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergo early percutaneous
coronary intervention (PCI) have superior outcomes compared to
thrombolytic agents, our group has preferred PCI for treatment of
our STEMI patients. Technology advances such as stents, and
support systems such as intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation
devices have dramatically reduced the need for emergent coronary
bypass graft surgery (CABG) following failed PCI to less than 1%.
Our outcomes as reported in the ACC-National Cardiovascular
Registry compare favorably to national statistics.
In
2003, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center consolidated the cardiac
surgery programs to the Summit campus. Dr. Robert Greene helped
our Medical Center obtain a program flexibility from the
Department of Health Services (DHS) of the State of California.
This waiver has allowed the Ashby campus to continue emergency
coronary interventional services without on-site cardiac surgery.
Our
elective PCI outpatients and referrals for cardiac bypass surgery
are admitted to the Summit campus. The Summit Campus of Alta Bates
Summit Medical Center has been recognized twice for excellence in
coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) by the California CABG
Mortality Reporting Program. We were one of only five hospitals in
California to receive this distinction in 2003. |

We
diagnose and treat complex cardiac heartbeat
irregularities. This field is known as cardiac
electrophysiology. We insert pacemakers and defibrillators
and use advanced 3D mapping systems to diagnose and ablate
cardiac arrhythmias. |

Adult
Congenital Heart Disease
| Breakthroughs
in the treatment of congenital heart disease in
the past 25 years have resulted in an ever-growing
pool of patients surviving childhood and
transitioning into adulthood. The Adult Congenital
Heart Disease Center of the East Bay, in operation
since 1988 has sought to provide a
multidisciplinary approach to help meet the needs
of these patients.

We
have a join program with Pediatric Cardiology
Medical Group at Children’s Hospital in Oakland.
Drs. Said Saba and Hidentra Patel are
working with Dr. Luisa Munoz to deploy the Amplatzer-
a transcatheter
device for closure
of patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defects.
Today, with sophisticated echocardiographic and
x-ray imaging, we can close these defects in the
cardiac catheterization lab rather than the need
for open heart surgery.

|
Our Center also sponsors an adult support group
(The Heart Connection) for adults with congenital
heart disease. Our goal is to promote
communication and provide encouragement by giving
support to persons age 17 and older who have grown
up with a heart condition. It meets bi-monthly in
our office at the Alta Bates campus. It is the
only such support group in the Bay Area. Contact
the clinic through Zoe Caldwell, 510-204-1691 or

Cardiac
Rehab
|
Every
day, hundreds of heart patients come to
Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s
cardiac rehabilitation program. If
you’re like most of our patients, you
come here to lower your cholesterol, blood
pressure, stress level, or weight after a
recent cardiac event.
When
you join our program, you can be confident
that you are receiving quality, medically
supervised rehabilitation care. We are
certified by the American Association of
Cardiovascular and
Pulmonary
Rehabilitation.

All
of our staff members have years of cardiac
rehab experience, so you can exercise with
the assurance that we are watching for
signs of cardiac complications and keeping
your physicians informed of your progress.
Your
exercise prescription is based on your
cardiologist’s order, the results of
your admission treadmill test and your
health history. You will attend exercise
classes, led by an exercise physiologist,
three times per week for up to 12 weeks. |
|
Each
class begins with various warm-up
exercises, including stretching, balance
enhancement, and low-level weight training
followed by 25 minutes of aerobic
exercise. You will use the latest exercise
equipment, including treadmills, step
machines, rowers,
stationary
bikes, elliptical trainers, arm ergometers,
and other equipment. Cool-down activities
include stretching and relaxation imaging.
Patient education is an essential component of our cardiac
rehabilitation, so you and your family are
encouraged to participate in our weekly
health education programs. Individual
counseling and group sessions cover topics
that include heart-healthy nutrition,
stress reduction, smoking cessation,
physical conditioning, medications, and
the anatomy and physiology of heart
disease.
We
offer convenient cardiac rehab programs at
the Alta Bates and Summit campuses:

We
are participating in the Women's Heart Advantage |
|
An
educational program sponsored by doctors,
nurses of Sutter health to raise awareness
of women’s heart disease, risk factors,
early detection and treatment.
Many
women think that heart disease primarily
affects men - that is not true. In fact,
more women die of heart disease than men.
It is the #1 killer of women, regardless
of race or ethnicity.
A
majority of women in Northern California
have one or more risk factors for heart
disease but do not consider themselves to
be at risk for a heart attack. In
addition, most women are not aware that
heart disease is their greatest health
threat, despite statistics that show more
women than men have died each year from
heart attack since 1984.

CHF
Clinic
|
|
BCMG
has an outpatient Congestive Heart Failure
clinic that provides comprehensive care
for patients with systolic and diastolic
LV dysfunction. The clinic provides
patient assessments, data analysis,
medication initiation and titration,
diagnostic and laboratory follow-up, and a
comprehensive teaching program. The
clinic is supervised by Dr. Luisa Munoz, a
CHF specialist, and nursing director
Eileen Healy, CNS, MS. Patients have
an opportunity to be involved in state of
the art research protocols including
biventricular assist devices, cardiac
resynchronization therapy, referral for
heart transplants, and innovative
pharmacological agents.
